I would rather they be turned on with a pressure plate. As this way, there is no way of "accidentally logging off" with the machine on or hearing the frequent "I forgot to turn it off". I can't trust players to keep doors in Newtown closed, I don't see how I can trust them to keep levers off when not in use.

Oh I hate when people leave doors open. I had a lever activated door somewhere and people would just open it and walk away.

What about the mega furnace that has the hopper cart on top continually going back and forth?

That's fine with me. No actual redstone signals are being activated and it is much easier on the CPU than if you were to string hoppers together.

I'm not sure that your aware of the worldwide technique to reduce lag from clocks immensely, let me copy paste.
Let me introduce you to your new best friend...Glowstone. Yes that's right glowstone. How will this help me you ask? Well let me tell you. If you were to encase your redstone torches and your repeaters in glowstone (generally 3 blocks in front, behind and on top of your redstone torches and repeaters) that would saturate that area with block light meaning that when the repeaters or torches change state there would be no BLU, thereby eliminating the lag caused by them. It's really that simple, this method can be used on big circuits or small and it will make a difference.
I hope this helps.

This is actually why aquarium so much more well lit at the contraption than the actual service area. And while this reduces lag tremendously, it does not reduce much of the lag that comes after it. Entity cramming, residual data from fast contraptions, particle lag accumulation, etc.
