Nether Portal

Does anyone have a decent understanting of nether portals?
1 need 3 different portals for 3 different places and i have all 3 overworld portal coords set up in the nether too divided by 8.
But the problem is that they are still not linking up properly. can it be that it doesn't want to work if they are too close to each other in the nether?
Please only answer if you actually know a thing or 2 about nether portals and your answer can be of value!!
