i have a 2007 macbook pro, and i just turned off my 3d resource pack and my frames whent from 3-8 to 30-350 (it crashed due to the speed)
i never experience server lag (other than frame drops)
so if you die often of lag, here are tips
- get optifine
- render distance no more that 16
- turn off any 3d resource pack
if none of those work, then there might be a silverfish in your computer

Server lag is not the same as client lag. The steps you are providing helps reduce client lag but will not reduce server lag.
