Sponges? Glitch?

I started with 5 sponges and now only have 3....

I put them in the furnace and then they seem to disappear. I've had 2 sponges disappear once I click on them to put them back in my inventory. Could this be a possible glitch?

I asked people on the server cause that was my first thought but no one thought that you were able to do that. i only put them in the furnace twice.
