normally, when i don't have that many chunks loaded, it is a good 200+
when there is many chunks loaded (by me), i get around 70
and when i had my 3D resource pack, i dropped to around 20
and when i use my laptop, single player 200+, multiplayer 5 if im lucky (this laptop is over 10 years old)

30-40 works. To be honest, you don't actually need more than that. It's just a nice cushion if you do.

I have a new-ish laptop. I think it was released in like 2014. I only get 21-50 because it is a "student" computer so not too good with gaming. It has like 12 gigs of RAM and ONLY 27.8 GIGS OF HARD DRIVE SPACE. UUUUGGGGHHHH

I have a Dell Optiplex 790 3.3Ghz 8GB RAM. I use Optifine, I've been leaving loaded chunks set to 32 and I use MojoKraft 256x resource pack. I'm in the 21-50 range most of the time at these setting but with less intense resource packs I can get over 200fps. When I feel like I'm lagging I'll drop down to the 128x or 64x version of Mojokraft or set the chunks loaded to 24 or less.

3440x1440 screen is hard to run for GPU, but I manage to get 500+ fps. Screenshot:
